Doc Eifrig: This inexpensive vitamin could help prevent cataracts
Friday, October 28, 2011
From Dr. David Eifrig in Retirement Millionaire:
In June, I told you that a vegetarian diet is linked to a lower cataract
risk. New research shows vitamin C may also lower your chance of
developing cataracts. A study done in India showed people deficient in
vitamin C were more likely to have cataracts. And those with adequate
levels were 39% less likely to develop cataracts.
Cataracts are thought to be caused from oxidative damage. Since vitamin C
is an anti-oxidant, perhaps the higher levels prevent cataracts. In
addition, the eye has one of the highest concentrations of vitamin C
inside the body.
But don't go overboard... no evidence suggests taking excessive amounts
of vitamin C further lowers your risk of cataracts. Vitamin C is
water-soluble, so excess is excreted from the body through your urine.
Our bodies can store about 2,500 milligrams, while it's depleted at a
fairly constant rate of 5% of the store a day. That means we use up
about 125 milligrams of vitamin C per day. But added stress increases
the use of vitamin C. After a few days of added stress, poor diet, or
heavy exercise, the body easily loses 50% of the total pool, or about
1,250 milligrams.
Do what I do to get the full benefits of vitamin C... Take about
1,000-2,000 mg of vitamin C a day. This keeps my body stores high and
gives me the added benefit of preventing colds – something especially
important this time of year.
